Charlie’s Cues

When Charlie was a little pup, I once plucked a long, dry weed and teased him with it. He caught the very end between his teeth, bit it off, and spit it out. I teased him with the weed stalk again, and he nipped off another quarter-inch bit and spit it out. Over and over for the length of the weed.

This became one of our games ~ I hold out a dry weed frond, and he nips it off in tiny bits until he reaches my fingers.

Charlie now uses ‘weed nipping’ as a signal that he wants to play. He’ll run to a stand of dry weeds and nip them off, shaking his head as he spits them out, his cue for “Come play with me!”

    How darling!

They all have their little idiosyncrasies and that is why we love them.

Charlie is yet another example of how well our animals train us. With a little encouragement, we can learn the language they choose to communicate in with us. Good work Charlie and good work Shreve!
